Types of Wrinkles on the Face

Wrinkles on the face are one of the most common reasons for visiting a cosmetologist. However, not everyone knows that this term encompasses several different concepts: wrinkles, grooves, folds, and creases. These changes in the skin's texture vary in depth, causes, and correction methods. Let's take a closer look at the different types of wrinkles on the face, how they differ, and which procedures are most effective for combating each of them.

What are Wrinkles, Grooves, Folds, and Creases?

Wrinkles are superficial lines and indentations in the upper layers of the skin. They often arise due to photoaging, dehydration, and improper care. The main causes include active facial expressions, UV radiation, stress, and lack of moisture.

Grooves are deeper and more pronounced lines associated with the loss of collagen and elastin. Degenerative changes occur in the dermis, leading to reduced skin density and the formation of persistent wrinkles. An example is the nasolabial groove and frown lines.

Folds form as a result of anatomical tissue sagging, most often with age. A classic example is the nasolabial fold, which occurs due to gravitational ptosis of the cheeks.

Creases are persistent scar-like changes caused by active facial expressions and improper head/face positioning during sleep. They often appear in those who prefer sleeping on one side or frequently furrow their brows.

Types of Wrinkles by Cause

For proper correction, it's important to understand why wrinkles have formed. Cosmetologists identify three main types:

Dynamic Wrinkles
These appear early—after the age of 25. They result from the active use of facial muscles. The forehead, area around the eyes ("crow's feet"), and nose are primary risk areas.

Static Wrinkles
These develop over time as the skin loses elasticity. They are exacerbated by poor posture, sleeping habits, and frequent tilting of the head (e.g., from prolonged smartphone use).

Age-Related Wrinkles
These manifest after 40 when the processes of collagen breakdown exceed its synthesis. Without comprehensive care, age-related wrinkles quickly become deep and persistent.

Localization of Wrinkles: Where Do Changes Most Often Occur?

Upper Third of the Face: forehead, glabella (between the eyebrows), "crow's feet," nose (bunny lines), nasolacrimal groove.

Middle Third: nasolabial folds, cheeks, grooves near the ears.

Lower Third: marionette lines, "kissing" wrinkles, labiomental area.

Neck: Venus rings, platysma bands, submental fold.
